Sunday 16th November 2008 Flixton Juniors 0-2 Wilmslow Sports Pumas

Timperley and District Junior Football League

Division 1 Under 15’s

Flixton Juniors 0-2 Wilmslow Sports Pumas

A must win game, as Pumas went to basement club Flixton. Pumas will be relieved to make it two wins in six, but will be disappointed to come away with just two goals. These were scored, one in each half from Whatmore and Holmes respectively. It was less than they deserved, Pumas peppered the Flixton box but either miscued the finish or were denied by an outstanding keeper.

In defence Harding and Nield were comfortable and with the encouragement of coach Thomas given licence, to release full backs O’Malley and Muir who in turn fed Bailey-Jones and Thomas down the flanks. Pumas relished a good flat pitch and played some fine one and two touch football at times. The middle ground was bossed throughout the game by Coyle, displaying both a range of pass and good vision.

The first goal came from a break down the right starting in defence. Harding released Bailey Jones who worked well with the industrious Wood to feed Whatmore in the box. The finish ‘made in Arsenal’ claimed his Dad, was exquisite, an ‘Anelka’ type chip over the diving goalkeeper.

The second was a tap in after some pinball passing in the Flixton box involving Holt, Bailey Jones once again, and finally Holmes from about a foot. Pumas had appeared goal shy up to that point, having missed from not much more than a foot on several occasions. The relief was palpable and as Pumas tired, goalkeeper Bishop was called into action to secure a first clean sheet of the season.

Pumas: Bishop, O’Malley, Muir, Harding, Nield, Wood, Coyle, Wood, Bailey Jones, Whatmore, Holmes, Holt, Thomas.

Goalscorers Whatmore, Holmes

MOM Bailey-Jones.

Sunday 16th November 2008 U14 Pumas v Great Moor County A

November 17th, 2008

Great Moor County A 1, Wilmslow Under 14s Pumas 6

Wilmslow gave a virtuoso display of passing and power to win this top of the table clash against the reigning champions in style.
From the kick off Wilmslow looked the more determined and, despite the heavy pitch, persevered with their neat passing game. It reaped its reward in the 3rd minute when Michael T was brought down on the edge of the box and Callum W converted the spot kick.
Four minutes later a brilliant defence-splitting pass from Callum W found Michael on the right hand side of the Great Moor area and he coolly slotted home to make it 2-0.
The home side then came back into the game and tried to find a way back but found the Wilmslow defence in solid form. There were a few scares when Great Moor perhaps felt they could have grabbed a goal but it was Wilmslow who had it in the back of the net next when Lee headed home from a corner in the 25th minute.
The home side finally got onto the score sheet when a shot from the right hand side was adjudged to have crossed the line despite the brave headed efforts of Henry but it looked like 4-1 seconds later when Will B brilliantly found space in the Great Moor box but slammed his shot against the bar to leave it at 3-1 going in to half time.
The second half began in the same way as the first and Wilmslow extended their lead with a great solo effort from Callum W within three minutes of the restart. The goal came from a Great Moor corner, Will B bringing the ball out of the danger area and finding Callum W on the halfway line with a perfect pass, he beat his marker and finished in great style to make it 4-1.
Minutes later and it was five, this time Will B got the goal he deserved after a great passing move.
Wilmslow were now in control and hungry for more goals at looked like scoring from every attack but, like last week, they found the opposition goalkeeper in fine form.
George W found the net with a brilliant individual effort, beating several players before slotting home to make it 6-1 on the hour mark to seal a fine victory and send Wilmslow 2 points clear at the top of the league.

Fletcher Moss 0 - 5 Wilmslow Sports Under 13 Pumas Sunday 16th November 2008

November 17th, 2008

After last weeks defeat at the accomplished Boothstown, Chris Lee was welcomed back to the helm, for a midday kick off on the banks of the Mersey.  A perfect autumnal day, was for once matched by the Pumas performance, when players made up for their lack of commitment the week before with some excellent performances on the pitch. The first half was reasonably matched. Fletcher made an early foray and Pumas found their ground. An excellent Josh Baker tackle in central midfield was an indication of what sort of game he was to have, and Fletcher’s pace particularly the tricky number 15, was matched by Joe Swindells; Chris Arnot and Tom Lee. Wilmslow were to take first blood with a well struck Navid Nasseri goal, after 10 minutes play; when a well crafted move saw Navid slot home for the third week on the trot. Tom Lee went close on a couple of occasions but there was only the one goal difference at half time.

The second half started strongly for Wilmslow; gradually they put pressure on Fletcher. A Sean Gregory shot which looked far too weak crept in at the far post. Fletcher tried to regain ground but Johnny stood tall and flicked the ball over ; Sean now had the bit in his teeth and scored a much better second minutes later; and only missed out on his hat trick when the upright got in his way. Joe Burns missed a couple of chances; and excellent Josh Baker control only disappointed in his finish; and still Fletcher had chances when a supreme display of sprinting between Joe Swindells and the Fletcher winger saw the Pumas coming out on top. Fletcher were now camped in their own half and the game was finally over when first Nick Maxwell and then, Man of the Match, Josh Baker hit home excellent strikes.

Squad

Griffiths; Chesterton; Dibble: Stubbs; Mealing; Baker; Warwick; Maxwell; Arnott; Gregory; Nasseri; Burns; Lee; Swindells.

16th November 2008 U17 Hawks v Broadheath

November 17th, 2008

Today we played Broadheath away and won 4 - 0.

It was 0 - 0 at half time with Wilmslow having the best chances. After the team talk and some minor changes we put more pressure on Broadheath.

Pete Mealing scored from a great pass from Mike Beck in the 15 min, after a further 5 min Pete scored his second goal. Wilmslow continued to dominate the match and had a number of chances that the Broadheath goalkeeper managed to save. In the 40 min Alex Forsberg scored and finally in the last minute Adam Whelan scored. All the players worked very hard and deserved the win.

Man of the Match Alex Forsberg.

Sunday 9th November 2008 Under 13 Pumas v Boothstown

November 10th, 2008

Boothstown 9 - 4 Wilmslow Sports Under 13 Pumas

In an impressive display of attacking football Pumas were soundly beaten by new boys Boothstown. The Pumas were impressed by the facilities Boothstown had to offer; changing rooms that rival any visited so far; and maybe the luxury of warm changing rooms was too much on a wet day with a biting wind.

The game was end to end, with not much in defence or midfield, from the Wilmslow boys at least. Goals and excellent play by Navid Nasseri and Joe Burns the only real highlights, on a day when too many failed to get out of the starting blocks. Navid’ s  twisting runs through the Boothstown defence, and Joe’s more direct approach got the Pumas goals; but they only played parity with Boothstown; until three corners also provided goals for the hosts.

Coming back from 5-2 down seemed a slight possibility in the second half as once again Joe and Navid created and scored excellent opportunities straight after the restart. Then Boothstown started playing again and could have scored significantly more than the 4 they converted, with only saves off the line keeping the tally down.

The worse defensive display from the Pumas; well in terms of goals conceded, is one remembrance day we would like to try and forget. Well done to Boothstown for their exciting attacking play, they thoroughly deserved the points. Sadly worse was to come for those sad souls, who also had to endure the trials of watching Manchester City that afternoon. At my age I should know better!

Sat 8th November U9 Pumas v Wythenshawe Town 9A’s

November 10th, 2008

The Under 9 Pumas had a superb game yet again at home against Wythenshawe Town. The rain held off, but there was a chilly wind blowing, however this didn’t hinder the Pumas!

We more than welcomed back Harry and his super goal keeping after his holiday to sunny Oz. No signs of jet lag as he slipped back into the game as if he’d never been away! In general our defenders Max, Lewis, Niklas, Brandon and Baptiste held it together brilliantly throughout the game, supporting their goalie.

In the 1st 15 minutes, Pumas scored with a free kick from near the half way line, by the captain James Darroch. Wythenshawe must have thought it was déjà vu! The goal was almost exactly the same as our opener in the last game with them. Totally spectacular!

Wythenshawe were a more organised team this game. Their tackling was less extreme and they had plenty pushes forward to test Harry’s reflexes. In our 2nd 15 minutes, James broke through and scored another cracker!

After an opening stint in mid field Alasdair Fyfe (Man of Match for last week’s game) dropped back to support the defenders. This was to ensure that Wythenshawe couldn’t creep back into the game.

All the forwards continued an insistent attack on Wythenshawe, however there were no more goals. The 3rd section of the game was still full of excitement and James only just missed out on a hat trick. Due to this superb show of skills he was awarded Man of the Match by the opposition Manager. Well done, but Colin & Jon think all the boys were excellent this weekend! Final score 2-0 to the Pumas!

Squad – Harry Meir, Alasdair Fyfe, Baptiste Muffat, Max Thompson, Thomas Calthorpe, James Darroch (C), Brandon Stokes, Jamie Warwick, Joseph Carroll, Niklas Edler, Lewis McKie.

Sunday 9th November 2008 U14 Pumas 5 Prestbury 3

November 10th, 2008

Wilmslow’s 100% start to the season withstood its toughest test so far in an all action encounter. Prestbury arrived full of confidence after holding Great Moor and Vulcans to draws in their previous two matches and had a dream start, racing into a two goal lead inside the first ten minutes. However, like the final score, this was by no means a fair reflection of the match, as Wilmslow outpaced and outpassed their plucky opponents and but for some great goalkeeping would have been victors by a far mightier margin.

Merv’s searing runs down the right flank had the Prestbury defence stretched but it was a precise passing movement that should’ve put the home side 1-0 up on five minutes. A switch in play from left to right saw a pinpoint cross met with a perfect Will B volley at the far post but this was matched by a stunning point blank save by the Prestbury ‘keeper. Two minutes later another Will B effort fizzed just wide of the post and an identical move on ten minutes was well gathered by the visiting custodian as Wilmslow turned the screw.

Then out of the blue, the visitors seized the initiative. A long ball over the top caused confusion in the centre of the home defence and the Prestbury front man lobbed into an unguarded net from 20 yards to make it 1-0. Two minutes later the pacey number 11 breached the back four to finish smartly and it looked as though Wilmslow were going to pay for their missed chances.

But to their credit, patience prevailed over panic and within two minutes Wilmslow were back in the game when Callum W finished from close range. The scores were soon level after yet another punishing Merv rampage down the right, his cross met brilliantly by Henry to make it 2-2.

Prestbury almost immediately regained the lead on 20 minutes, but were saved by Ben in what was to be one of the visitors’ last serious threats on the Wilmslow goal.

The Prestbury ‘keeper then proceeded to perform heroics to keep his side in the game as shots peppered the visitors’ goal but he could do nothing to stop Callum W grabbing his second on 30 minutes to send Wilmslow in at half time 3-2 up.

The second half continued in the same vein, this time George W and Callum W were linking up brilliantly down the left hand side, feeding Will B who was only prevented from adding to the scoring by yet more great goalkeeping. Finally he got his reward, volleying home from the edge of the six yard box at the far post on 55 minutes.

But the hard work to earn the two goal cushion was almost instantly undone as Prestbury desperately went in search of a goal and it came in the shape of a speculative shot from 30 yards which gave Ben no chance. With the Wilmslow back four excellently marshalled by Gibbo it was the only way Prestbury were ever going to get any more goals.

Once again Wilmslow surged back and yet again found the Prestbury ‘keeper equal to whatever they threw at them. That is until the 65th minute when he was powerless to stop a 25 yard piledriver from Henry, capping a fantastic display with his second of the match.

A gutsy and disciplined performance full of belief and hard graft and more of the same will be needed next week when the travel to face the current league champions Great Moor County.

2nd November 2008 Wilmslow Sports Under 13 Pumas 2 - Unicorn Falcons 2

November 3rd, 2008

A fair result for a game played in good spirit against high flying Unicorn Falcons. Falcons took the lead in the opening minutes when a long throw eluded the Wilmslow defence and was poked home. Parity was regained when Sean Gregory equalised from the penalty spot just before half time, although celebrations were curtailed as Falcons again regained the lead. The flying Falcons forward, who caused the Pumas problems most of the morning, broke through with a long ball that left the Pumas defence statuesque once again, and finished well, despite Johnny Griffiths attempts to narrow the angle.

The second half saw Wilmslow start brighter; and man of the match Navid Nasseri, took on the play down the wing and created opportunities for Joe B and Tom. The Pumas also continually failed to head the high balls that were flying through, that were a constant threat on their goal. The Pumas persistence finally paid off when Joe Burns hit a decisive header past the oncoming Falcons keeper to level the score. Both teams then had chances to win the game; Tom Lee unlucky not to score just before the end, but a draw seemed a fair result for both teams. With not enough decisive play from corners and free kicks Wilmslow’s chances were limited to the break, and whilst both teams had good chances, Pumas needed off the line clearances from Chris Arnot and Josh Baker, as well as saves from Johnny to keep them in the game.

Squad

Griffiths; Chesterton: Arnot; Dibble: Gregory (1 ) (Pen); Burns; (1) Swindells; Mealing; Duffy; Matsuura; Lee; Nasseri; Stubbs; Baker.

Stockport Vikings 2, Wilmslow Under 14s Pumas 4

Wilmslow staged a second half fightback to maintain their 100 percent league record with a hard fought win at Stockport Vikings. The hosts took the lead on 15 minutes after a goalmouth scramble following a corner but within 2 minutes the scores were level, Tom P striking from the left hand edge of the area following good work from Will B.

Wilmslow saw several more chances go begging as Henry made some excellent runs from defence down the right hand side and Lee got through an immense amount of work in the middle but it was Vikings who edged in front to lead 2-1 at the break.

A reshuffle saw Wilmslow take control in the second half though and with Merv marauding down the flanks and punishing Vikings with his pace the equaliser soon came, goals from Will B (2) and Michael sealed an impressive and hard-earned victory.

Other results from the First Division:

Great Moor County A 3, Prestbury 3

19th October 2008 Under 13 Pumas 4- 2 Fletcher Moss Blues Sunday

October 20th, 2008

The Under 13 Pumas took their first points of the season, in only their second game, having been embroiled in the wonders of the cup for the last two weekends. A Joe Burns brace; a well converted Sean Gregory penalty and a third goal in both competitions for Tom Lee, sealed the victory for the eleven Pumas who were fit and available for this fixture. Fletcher took both their goals well and were able to contain the Pumas until the penalty decision threw the game back Wilmslow’s way. This was a team victory, with a good level of play all-round, man of the match was Joe Burns for his first goals of the season.
